This week’s issue is Light as Language.
Light does far more than make a photograph bright enough to see. Its direction, quality, color, contrast, and shadows can completely change what a photograph says and how it feels.
The same subject can appear peaceful, dramatic, mysterious, warm, harsh, or completely ordinary depending on the light falling across it. Learning photography means recognizing those differences and eventually using them intentionally.

And this week’s Camera Date, One Subject, Five Voices, puts that idea into practice.
Choose one familiar subject and photograph it in five different kinds of light. Don’t worry about finding five different subjects. Keep the subject the same so you can focus on what the light is doing and how it changes the photograph.
Pay attention to direction, shadows, contrast, color, and mood. Then choose your Keeper, the photograph where the light, the subject, and your decisions came together best.
